After 4 edits of today’s original post, I give up and will borrow a link from Josh Graves.

This is a preacher who loves him some NASCAR.

Love me some NASCAR

I’m not going to go into how Jesus taught us to pray and make any comparisons (as if) or contrasts.

Here’s a link to my good friend’s blog if you want to read more on prayer and how Jesus’ idea may be a little different than Pastor Nelms

Thoughts on Prayer

I’m not condemning Pastor Nelms or suggesting Rick knows all there is to know about prayer.  I mean, can you really hate a guy who prays for his smoking hot wife?  Just trying to be fair and balanced today.

Grace and peace to you. Loving Wednesdays

The last two Wednesdays have been powerful days for me.  Our Bible study at work has been really good and some people have shown up that let’s me know God is at work in hearts in some really awesome ways.  That is followed by our youth class at church which may be the highlight of the week for me already.  (Yes Jacob, it’s because you are there!)  Last night we had a special prayer night.  Our kids have named some adults who have stood out to them as mentors, friends and confidantes and those adults were there to pray with the kids or kids prayed with other kids.  It was powerful to watch how people came and went from the classroom as we sang so they could go pray about joys, pains, fears and things they rejoiced over.  It was an emotional time for me to see these young people open up with each other, rely on each other and lift each other up.  It continues to give me hope that the future generation will be more authentic with each other and will live out lives that closely resemble Christ’s life.

“Do not pray for easy lives.  Pray to be stronger men.  Do not pray for tasks equal to your powers.  Pray for powers equal to your tasks.  Then the doing of your work shall be no miracle, but you shall be the miracle.”  –  Phillip Brooks, U.S. Episcopal Bishop (1835-1893)

I have long prayed that my life would fit into my neat, comfortable idea of what it should be.  This is a good reminder that my prayer should fit into the image of what God wants to do with it.  What can I be if I just let Him work in me?

Grace and peace to you.

We started talking about ideas offered in the book Crazy Love by Frances Chan in class last night.  Thinking about it has re-energized my mind and heart for how I want to serve God and live in His will for me.  In the video clip we watched tonight, Chan talked about our prayer life and how we approach God – whether it be routine or whether we are blown away each time we come in the presence of God to talk to Him.  He related how, after reading Revelations 4, it stopped him and humbled him before talking to God and got him thinking, “when I come into the presence of God, what will be the first thing I want to say?”  Think about it.  We sometimes talk about the questions we want to ask but what will really happen when we approach the presence of God, the Creator of the world, the Author of life, the Healer, the Savior.

If you haven’t read Crazy Love I can only ask why.  It will challenge the strongest Christian to draw nearer to God, to reassess their life and the path they are walking.
